Memorials may be made in her honor to The Ministry of the Fellowship of Christian Athletes, 1042 N. Fifth Street, Hartsville, SC 29550.

Mrs. Griggs was born on December 8, 1942, in Hartsville, SC. She was the oldest daughter of the late Luther G. “Big Luther” Howard and the late Nona Mae Rogers Howard.

Doris graduated from Hartsville High School in 1961 and earned a degree from Coker University in 2000. She worked as a paralegal and retired from Sonoco after 35 years. She was a lady of many talents, who had a beautiful singing voice and a talent for playing the piano, even though she couldn’t read music! She had a very special gift from God.

She was also talented with interior design and was one of the best interior decorators in Hartsville. She was a devoted mother, and sister, and was a faithful friend to many. Doris was the type of lady who would give you her last penny. She enjoyed spending time with her family more than anything else. She was often found playing the piano at jam sessions with Mr. Roy Harris. People in the church would come early to hear them playing and could enjoy the music before worship services started.

She is survived by her loving son, John “Bootsie” (Jenny) Griggs; sisters, Ann Hudson, and Dale Davis; brother, Ron (Vickie) Howard; sister-in-law Joye Howard; grandsons, Teal Davis and Jason Davis; nieces, Sandy Colston, Carla Benton, Jackie Tyner, and Megan Carnell; and a devoted special man in her life, Hubert Griggs.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her brother, Luther “Bucky” Howard; sister-in-law, Carol Howard; brother-in-law, Lorain Davis; and a very special niece, Debra Lynn Davis.

Bootsie and Jenny would like to thank the caregivers who helped care for their mom: Elizabeth Vogan, Kathy Barnwell, Gayle Walters, Nikki Davis, Dale Davis, Ann Hudson, Pat Hewitt, Kay Tumbleston, and the one lady who tirelessly helped clean and was always at the ready, Ann Brand — Thank you all so much for your care of mom.
