Obituary of Barbara Helen Thompson

Barbara Helen Thompson, 80, of Beaufort, entered into eternal rest on March 22, 2024, at Viva Senior Living in Gaffney, South Carolina.

Born in Ruffin, South Carolina, on July 31, 1943, Barbara was the daughter of the late Thomas Marion “Red” Thompson and Geanell Johns Thompson. Barbara was a resident of her beloved Beaufort, South Carolina for over 60 years. A graduate of Beaufort High School and Coker College, Barbara was a retired Beaufort County school teacher. She was a member of Carteret United Methodist Church, McLeod-McAfee Circle, Trinity Sunday School Class, Teacher Retirees Lunch Group, and Beaufort Library Book Club. Barbara volunteered for organizations such as Meals on Wheels, The Arts Council of Beaufort, and the Beaufort Film Festival.

Surviving are her cousins, Rhonda Johns, Sydney Johns (Chris Turner), Paulette Ivey, David Johns (Shari), Joseph Johns (Debbie), Brenda Champan, Mike Champan (Carol), Jim Champan (Lori), Dolly Champan Amoroso, and JoAnn Carroll Hall. She was preceded in death by her uncles, Lester Odell Johns, Joseph Harris Johns, Ervin Sifley Thompson; her aunts, Beulah Johns Champan and Helen Serena Thompson; and cousins, Kelly Johns Tan, Donna Champan Walter, and Linda Champan Olson.

The family would like to express their sincere appreciation for the love and care that Barbara received over the past several years from her caregivers at Viva Senior Living in Gaffney.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday morning, April 27, 2024 at 11:00 AM, at Carteret Street United Methodist Church, 408 Carteret Street, Beaufort, SC 29902. The family will receive friends preceding the service from 10 until 11 in the church sanctuary. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Humane Association of the Lowcountry. Donate here
