Pamela Rae Huggins Chapman

February 8, 1929 – August 21, 2018

Pamelia Rae Huggins Chapman, beloved wife of the late Henry D. Chapman, died on Tuesday, August 21, 2018. Born in Chesterfield County on February 8, 1929, she was the daughter of the late John Elmer and Bertice Rollins Huggins.

Known widely for her sweet smile and cheerful nature, Pam was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and great grandmother.

She is survived by her son, Michael Dewitte Chapman and his wife Cathy of Cheraw; her daughter, Joye Chapman Sansbury and her husband Dan of Hartsville; five grandchildren, Kelly Chapman Furtick (Ken), Daniel Sansbury (Meaghan), Michael Chapman, Jr. (Alison), Bryan Sansbury, and Gracyn Bancroft (Alan); and four great grandchildren, Andrew Furtick, Jonathan Furtick, Owen Furtick, and Michael Henry Bancroft. In addition, she is survived by her sister, Carolyn Kendall, sister-in-law, Patricia Huff, and several nieces and nephews.  

Pam was predeceased by her parents, listed above, as well as her husband, Henry D. Chapman, and two brothers, Elbert and Charles Huggins.

Pam graduated from Cheraw High School and received her BA degree in Elementary Education from Coker University in 1950. During her senior year at Coker, she served as class president. She worked in education for thirty years, most of which was spent at Cheraw Elementary School where she was everyone’s favorite teacher.

Pam loved her church, First Presbyterian, as well as her church family.  During the years, she served as a Sunday school teacher, deacon, elder, and camp counselor at Camp Pee Dee. She was also active in the Presbyterian Women, serving as circle chairman, vice moderator and moderator. In 1995, she received the Presbyterian Women’s Honorary Life Membership Award in recognition of her faithful service to her church.

Pam also enjoyed her hobbies. She was an avid reader and a member of the Ultimate Book Club. She loved playing bridge and was a member of the Monday Night Bridge Club for over 50 years. 

A Funeral Service will be held in Cheraw at 11: 00 a.m. on Saturday, August 25, 2018 at the First Presbyterian Church, 300 Market Street. Interment will follow at Chatham Hill Memorial Gardens.  Elder Avery Dickson will officiate.  The family will receive friends prior to the service in the Fellowship Building at the church from 10:00 to 11:00 a.m.

The family would like to extend a special thank you to Gayle Grant and Faye Quick for the love and wonderful care and attention they provided over the past two years. The family would also like to thank Hospice of Chesterfield County for their caring assistance during this difficult time.

Memorials may be made to the First Presbyterian Church, Cheraw, SC.; Coker University Hartsville, SC; Camp Pee Dee Retreat and Conference Center; or a charity of one’s choice.
