February 15, 1931 – February 1, 2009

Jean Lamond Crabbe, 77, of Summerville, SC, the wife of the former Commandant of Cadets at The Citadel, Col. William M. Crabbe, Jr. USAF, Ret., died Sunday, February 1, 2009, in a local hospital.

Born February 15, 1931 in Charleston, SC she was one of two daughters of Alexander MacGregor Lamond and Hilda Sands Gibson Lamond. She met her future husband on the train while they were both travelling home from college during Christmas break. She earned an associate degree from Coker University. Mrs. Crabbe was a loving wife and devoted mother who supported her husband’s military career. Jean was a member of the Citadel Women’s Club and enjoyed her role as a ‘Mother’ to the Corps of Cadets.

She is survived by her husband of 56 years, Col. William Mervin Crabbe, Jr., USAF Ret. of Summerville, SC; three sons: Lt. Col. William Mervin Crabbe III, USAF Ret. of Johns Island, Mark MacGregor Crabbe, MD and his wife, Linda Swain Crabbe, MD of Sumter, SC and Lt. Col. Matthew Lamond Crabbe, USAF Ret. and his wife Wendy Wintermute Crabbe of San Antonio, TX; eight grandchildren: Heather Ann and Rachel Elizabeth Crabbe, Christina Lynn, Lauren Jean, Caroline Leigh and Lisa Joy Crabbe, Christopher William Crabbe, Laura Lee Crabbe; great-grandchild, Camden Allison Crabbe; niece, Jeanne McLendon Few and her husband Dr. Theron Gary Few of Birmingham, AL and nephew, Alexander Sandy McLendon and his wife, Nancy McLendon of Perry, GA.

Her sister, Elizabeth McLendon, preceded her in death.

The family will receive friends Thursday, February 5, 2009, in J. HENRY STUHR, INC., NORTHWOODS CHAPEL, 2180 Greenridge Road between 4:00 and 6:00 P.M. The Liturgy of Christian Burial will be held Friday, February 6, 2009, at 2:00 P.M. in the Summerall Chapel at The Citadel with interment to follow at Arlington National Cemetery, Arlington, VA, Friday, February 27th at 11:00 a.m. In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to The Citadel Foundation, or Christ The Divine Teacher Parish at The Citadel, either at the following address: 171 Moultrie Street, Charleston, SC 29409 or the , 5900 Core Road, Suite 504, North Charleston, SC 29406.
