Charles Kirkland “Kirk” Dunlap, Jr.

April 3, 1922 – April 19, 2017

Charles Kirkland Dunlap Jr. died peacefully at his home on April 19, 2017. Kirk was born April 3, 1922 in Hartsville, SC, the son of the late Charles K. Dunlap and Katherine Connor Dunlap. He grew up in Hartsville, attended Hartsville city schools, and graduated from Clemson College in 1943 where he earned a degree in Mechanical Engineering. During World War II, he served in the Army Air Corps in the Pacific. He was employed by Sonoco Products Company for 31 years, retiring as Vice-President Engineering, Research and Development. He served on the Board of Directors of Sonoco Products Company, Mutual Savings and Loan Company, Girl Scouts of the Pee Dee, Big Brothers of the Pee Dee, and Kalmia Gardens. He was President of Dunlap Forestry, LLC. He also served on theBoard of Trustees of Coker University and was awarded an honorary Doctor of Humanities degree. He had been active in the Boy Scouts and had been a Big Brother. He served as a Deacon, Elder, and Trustee of First Presbyterian Church of Hartsville.

Kirk is survived by his wife, Jane Coker Dunlap of Florence, SC; sister, Louise D. Howell of Macon, GA; daughters, Martha D. Hamlett (Will) of Chapel Hill, NC, Katherine D. Moore of Hartsville, SC, Jenny D. Rogers of Hartsville, SC; son, Charles K. Dunlap III (Deborah) of Society Hill, SC; son-in-law, David O’Connor of Arlington, VA; grandchildren, Kathleen Hamlett of Elkhart, IN, Alex Hamlett (Jessica) of Parker, CO, Janie Byrd of Hartsville, SC, Robert Moore (Tasha) of Hartsville, SC, Katie Colgan (Randy) of Salt Lake City, UT, Daniel O’Connor of Arlington, VA, Lee Rogers (Mary Kate) of Bishopville, SC, Charles Rogers of Hartsville, SC, and Rebecca Rogers (Landon Ivie) of Hartsville, SC; and greatgrandchildren, Chloe Moore, Charley Moore, Isabel Moore, Mills Moore, Ella Gray Camak, Eliza Byrd, Flora Byrd, Carlos Acosta, Alexis Hamlett, Lock Rogers, and Rachel Rogers.

He was preceded in death by his daughter, Betsy O’Connor; sister, Katherine D.
Stackhouse; grandson, Hayes Hamlett; and son-in-law, T-Bone Moore.

A graveside service will be held at Magnolia Cemetery on Saturday, April 22, 2017 at
11:00 a.m. The Reverend Dr. Dan Sansbury will officiate. The family will receive friends on Friday, April 21, 2017 from 5:00 – 7:00 pm at the home of Kathy Moore, 1346 W Carolina Ave, Hartsville, SC. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to First Presbyterian Church, 213 W. Home Ave. Hartsville, SC 29550 or to Agape Hospice of Florence, 2182 W Evans St, Florence, SC 29501.
