
Barbara Ann Joyce Chambers, 90, of Salisbury, NC passed away Monday, May 26, 2025 at her residence.
Barbara was born December 14, 1934 in Sanford, NC to the late John Joyce and Neil Tritt Joyce. She was a graduate of Sanford Central High Class of 1952 and graduated from Coker College in Hartsville, SC in 1956 with a BS degree. From 1956-1957, she was a secretary for Huttig Sash and Door in Charlotte, NC. She moved to Salisbury in August 1957 and taught at Boyden High School for two years. She married George Chambers on June 3, 1958. Later she returned to teaching at Rowan Community College until her retirement.
She was an active member of First United Methodist Church where she taught 3rd grade Sunday School for several years, was a member of the Altar Guild and co-directed weddings for seven years. She was a member of the church Circle #3 and the Golden Forum Sunday school class.
Barbara was a past member of the Salisbury Jr. Women’s Club, Beta Sigma Pi Sorority and past Executive Secretary for the Rowan Heart Association. She as a past member of the Elizabeth Maxwell Steele Chapter, DAR and a board member of the Rowan Regional Medical Center Auxiliary and volunteered in the gift shop. She was a member of the Salisbury-Rowan Symphony Guild and a past box office manager.
Barbara was a charter member of the Historic Salisbury Foundation, belonging to the Rowan Museum where she was very involved with October Tour. She was a member of the English-Speaking Union and remained a member of McGuffey Graduates Book Club.
Barbara loved playing Canasta with six special friends. The Canasta group ceased playing, however she enjoyed having five friends over every other Friday afternoon for beverages pick-ups. She later returned to the Baptist faith.
She was preceded in death by her parents, an infant son, daughter George Anna Chambers Setzer, her husband, George Howard Chambers, and brothers-in-law, Ken Chambers and Robert Chambers.
Surviving is her son, Maxwell Howard Chambers and wife Jami Gerard Chambers; son-in-law, Glenn Edward Setzer; granddaughters, Anna Edward Setzer and Mary Maxwell Chambers; and sisters-in-law, Brenda Chambers and Margaret Chambers.
A graveside memorial service will be held at 2 PM Tuesday (June 3, 2025) at Rowan Memorial Park, officiated by Rev. Dr. Mark Conforti.
