John Foster III Center for Belonging and Community

The mission of the John Foster III Center for Belonging and Community is to create a more inclusive campus where everyone feels welcome, safe, and respected.

About Rev. John Foster III

Rev. John Foster III (1957-2017) served as an Associate Professor of Religion and the founding Director of the Center for Diversity, Interfaith, and Inclusion Education at Coker University (formerly Coker College) in Hartsville, South Carolina. A proud graduate of the University of South Carolina, he earned a B.A. and a Master of Education (M.Ed.). He was ordained a deacon in the Episcopal Diocese of South Carolina in December 2012.

During his nearly three-decade tenure at Coker, he was deeply committed to nurturing a campus environment characterized by belonging, compassion, and mutual respect. His warmth, mentorship, and advocacy for justice left a lasting mark on students, faculty, and the wider Hartsville community.

In honor of his legacy, Coker University renamed the Center he founded to the John Foster III Center for Belonging and Community, formally recognizing the culture of inclusion and care he fostered on campus.
