Weather Preparedness

Inclement Weather & Emergency Preparedness

At Coker University, the safety of our campus community is our highest priority.

Inclement weather may require changes to campus operations, and timely communication helps ensure everyone stays safe and informed.

How Decisions Are Made

University leaders closely monitor weather conditions using local and national forecasting information. Decisions about classes, events, and campus operations are based on safety, timing, and potential impact to travel and facilities.

Each situation is evaluated individually.

Academic Continuity Plan

In order to continue academic progress, Coker University is prepared to shift in-seat classes to online instruction in the event of an interruption of campus operations due to inclement weather or other situations. If Coker needs to close, instruction will be delivered through digital means.

Most faculty will use the Learning Management System and Google Meet to continue to engage students. Unless the Internet and power are unavailable, students are expected to access Brightspace daily when the campus has an unscheduled closure. Students should also check their Coker email daily for direct communication from instructors.
Knowing that students may have limited access to the Internet, faculty will accommodate a variety of situations; however, students must assume responsibility to communicate with the professor when unable to meet any deadline.

How You’ll Receive Updates

Students, Faculty, and Staff

Coker uses Cobra Alerts to share emergency, dining updates, and weather-related updates. Alerts are sent by text message and email to students, faculty, and staff.

Families & Community Members

Cobra Alerts are not sent to families or the general public. Families and community members should monitor Coker University’s official website and social media channels for updates.

Possible Impacts to Campus Operations

Depending on conditions, the University may implement:

  • Delayed openings or early closures
  • Remote instruction when feasible
  • Event cancellations or postponements
  • Temporary facility or service closures
  • Modified dining or service hours

Details will be shared through official communication channels.

What To Do During Severe Weather

If severe weather occurs while you are on campus:

  • Seek shelter in interior rooms, away from windows
  • Follow guidance from University officials
  • Avoid unnecessary travel
  • Rely on official University communications for updates

Students living on campus should follow instructions from Residence Life staff.

Be part of our community, as we work together to learn, lead, and inspire.
