WHy Join RAP?
Start your Coker journey with hands-on research, paid experience, and a built-in support system.
The Coker Research Apprenticeship Program (RAP) is designed especially for first-year Coker students who want to dive into research from the very beginning of their college journey. As a RAP scholar, you’ll work alongside faculty mentors, gain professional skills, and earn money while building a strong foundation for your academic and career success.
- Paid Research Experience
Earn $12/hour working 6–10 hours per week (up to $3,072 per year) as a faculty-mentored research assistant.
- Designed for First-Year Students
Transition smoothly into college life with academic, financial, and mentorship support. With faculty approval and available funding, you can continue in RAP beyond your first year.
- Professional Development
Monthly workshops help you build research skills, career readiness, and confidence as a scholar.
- One-on-One Mentorship
You’ll have a dedicated support system: the Director of Research and a faculty mentor in your field of interest.
- Your Own Laptop
First-time freshmen in RAP may be eligible to receive a brand-new MacBook Air (or equivalent). If you stick with the program for three semesters and graduate from Coker, the laptop is yours to keep.
- A Supportive Cohort
Every year, 12 new RAP scholars join the program – forming a tight-knit community of peers across different disciplines
Eligibility & How to Apply
RAP is open to:
- Full-time, first-year Coker students in good academic standing. (Students with more than 2 semesters at Coker may be considered based on availability.)
- Students with demonstrated financial need based on FAFSA.
- Students eligible for Federal Work-Study (encouraged but not required).
Selection is holistic—we’ll consider your academic record, financial need, and your potential as a future researcher.
