STEM Scholars


High-achieving students who are interested in majoring in biology, and in need of financial assistance to attend college, are welcome to apply!

Coker University is the lead institution on a research project involving five additional colleges, using a five-year grant from the National Science Foundation’s Scholarships in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics program (NSF S-STEM). (You can learn more about the collaborative grant here.) This means that Coker is able to provide approximately 18 first-year students (starting in the fall of 2019) with as much as $10,000 a year in scholarship aid for their four years of college, along with other benefits such as a free laptop computer, mentoring, individualized advising and involvement in research projects.

The goal of the SSB program is to increase the number of talented biology majors who go on to contribute to the advancement of knowledge in a broad range of scientific endeavors, either by entering the workforce or a life science-related graduate program upon graduation from Coker University.

To be eligible for the SSB program, students must meet the following requirements:

  • Be a U.S. citizen, national (as defined in section 101(a) of the Immigration and Nationality Act), alien admitted as a refugee under section 207 of the Immigration and Nationality Act, or an alien lawfully admitted to the U.S. for permanent residence.

  • Demonstrate financial need through submission of the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). (Additional information about filling out your FAFSA application available here.)

  • Be enrolled as a full-time, first-year student.

  • Intend to major in Biology.

  1. Complete and submit your SSB application, which will include a brief statement (250-300 words) explaining your past experiences/accomplishments in the sciences and your personal interest in becoming a scientist. Click here to fill out the application

  2. Complete your general Coker University application for admission. This includes your official high school transcript (GPA of 3.0 or higher), counselor/teacher recommendations, and your standardized test scores (ACT or SAT).

  3. Submit your financial aid application—Free Application for Federal Student Aid(FAFSA)––as soon as possible.
