Named for South Carolina’s “First Lady of Letters” and longtime friend of the college, Elizabeth Boatwright Coker, the 40,000-square foot Performing Arts Center was built in 1997 and houses the Watson Theater, Blackbox Theater, and Hannah Lide Coker Recital Hall. Public performances include concerts, dance performances, plays, musicals, and cultural events.
The Center is also a hub of activity for Coker’s students in the performing arts, with additional space dedicated to dance studios, a music/choral rehearsal studio, a costume shop, a scene shop, a green room, dressing rooms, and one of Coker’s iconic round-table classrooms.
The Stein Gallery, featuring a permanent exhibit of Coker’s fine arts collection, is located at the Center’s main entrance, providing visitors with a cultural experience unique to Hartsville and the Coker community.
