Outdoor Adventure Trips

Students participating in Coker College’s Fall Outdoor Adventure Trip tested their limits at the U.S. National White Water Center (USNWC) in Charlotte, N.C.

"Through the Outdoor Adventure Trips, students learn new things that can’t be learned inside the classroom,” said Lisa Potoka, Director of Student Activities and Leadership. “They learn to push their limits and to embrace new experiences."

At the USNWC, students chose from activities such as flat water kayaking, hiking, scaling a 57 foot climbing wall, white water rafting and ziplining.

"The idea is to encourage students to do things that are typically outside their comfort zones,” said Dr. Suzanne Parker, Assistant Professor of Physical Education and Sport Studies. “When students face their fears or do something they are unsure of, they experience great personal growth."

The Physical Education Department and Campus Life work together to organize multiple Outdoor Adventure Trips throughout the year. Dr. Parker’s PE students are required to attend, and all other students are invited.

"In the past, students have told me they never would have tried these new things if I hadn’t required them to do it," Dr. Parker said.

The Outdoor Adventure Trips make available a broad range of recreational opportunities in an effort to improve the physical wellness of Coker students. In the past, the trips have taken students to Appalachian Ski Mountain in Blowing Rock, N.C., where they skied and snowboarded, and Myrtle Beach, S.C., where they kayaked, kite boarded, paddle boarded and sailed.

"These trips also help build a sense of community," Potoka said. "Students interact with faculty and staff in a completely different atmosphere, outside the traditional roles typically experienced on campus. On the Outdoor Adventure Trips, we redefine the process of learning and gain confidence together."
