Milligan Wins Graphic Design Award

HARTSVILLE, S.C. – Apr. 21, 2014 – On Saturday, April 12, Coker College art student Joshua Milligan won the 2014 Market on Darlington Square Race Week Art Contest People’s Choice Award for his “Bojangles Southern 500” poster, an abstract rendition of the Darlington Raceway.

“Joshua is an extremely hardworking student and is diligent in his efforts to produce work,” said Ken Maginnis, associate professor of art at Coker College. “On one hand, it is no surprise that he did well in this competition. On the other hand, it is always a pleasant surprise when one of your students wins a competition. His victory shows what any student can do if they put their mind to it. I am extremely excited for Josh being able to show off his abilities.”

Entrants were required to produce original artwork based on the essence of the event as well as the location. The artwork was to illustrate the history, culture and excitement of racing.

“I drew upon the excitement and action often seen at the Darlington Raceway,” Milligan said of his winning artwork. “I worked on the movement you see during the race as well as the blur of cars as they speed by. The extensive use of vibrant and bright colors are what you might see at a NASCAR race.”

Milligan’s prize for winning the 18 and older category included $100 in cash and the opportunity to display his work during the 2014 Bojangles' Southern 500. A Hartsville native, Milligan is a sophomore art major with a concentration in graphic design at Coker College.
