Coker Adds Master of Education in Literacy Studies

HARTSVILLE, S.C. – Apr. 18, 2014 – Beginning June 16, 2014 Coker College will add its second postgraduate degree: a Master of Education in Literacy Studies. Graduates of the new program will qualify for the South Carolina Department of Education’s Literacy Teacher add-on certification.

“Designed with classroom teachers in mind, this degree will help educators gain and practice valuable content knowledge in order to help their own students become better readers and writers,” said Susan Henderson, associate professor of education and director of the Wiggins School of Education. “Our faculty and staff have come together to plan a valuable program of study with excellent courses, and we are looking forward to welcoming our first cohort this summer. It is truly an exciting time to be at Coker.”

The new program comes at a time when many stakeholders in South Carolina have recognized literacy as a growing educational issue statewide. Currently, the SC Senate and House are poised to address this issue with the Read to Succeed Act.

“The M.Ed. in Literacy Studies allows the college to further contribute to addressing a key need in the region, the state and beyond,” said Tracy Parkinson, provost at Coker College. “The faculty of the Wiggins School have worked to develop a course of study that will benefit current and future teachers and, consequently, the students whom they serve.”

The 12-month program comprises seven six-week terms and runs on a cohort structure, meaning students can enter the program once a year. The schedule includes intensive daily courses in the summer and a practicum in the fall that will allow teachers to immediately impact their current students’ literacy abilities.

From instructional strategies to pedagogy, the program’s courses will cover both theoretical and evidence-based foundations of reading and writing processes and instruction. Each course will be a hybrid structure, incorporating both in-class time and online coursework.

Tuition for the full 33-hour program totals $14,850, or $450 per credit hour. Teachers in the Darlington County School District are eligible for a scholarship for their final course, for a total program cost of $13,500.

Beginning the following academic year, Coker will also offer six credit hours of additional courses leading to a Literacy Coach add-on certification.

In May of 2012, Coker added a Master of Science in Athletic Administration program and upgraded its institutional classification from Level II, a baccalaureate college, to Level III, an institution that offers a master’s degree as its highest degree.
