Arnold Receives Best Presentation Award

HARTSVILLE, S.C. – March 18, 2014 – Coker College student Sean Arnold recently received the Best Presentation in Physical Chemistry Award at the 46th Southeast Undergraduate Research Conference. The conference was held January 30-31, 2014 at the University of Tennessee.

Arnold presented his research project entitled “Microwave Spectrum and Ab-Initio Calculations of 2-Chloro-3-Fluoropyridine.” He worked on the project from the summer of 2013 through the fall of 2014, supported by a research grant from the National Science Foundation.

“This grant allows students like Sean to work on cutting-edge research here at Coker,” said Gordon Brown, assistant professor of chemistry and coordinator of the chemistry major. “In his project, Sean was able to measure and analyze the microwave spectrum of 2-chloro-3-fluoropyridine, a chemical that is very useful in chemical research and industry. This research allows us to fully understand the shape of this compound. The shape, in turn, determines the function of the compound. Therefore, through the study, we can better understand reactions and interactions that this compound will undergo.

“I am not at all surprised that Sean won this award. He has gained a wealth of experience both in the research lab and in presenting his research at other conferences. He is really good at explaining very complex research in a way that those outside of his field can understand.”

Graduate Recruiter Rachel Rui from the University of Tennessee extended the invitation for Arnold to come to the conference. Arnold registered and submitted an abstract, one of the few selected to be presented at the conference.
