Laura Carpenter Truitt to Have Work Displayed in Gallery

HARTSVILLE, S.C. – Jan. 31, 2014 – The Cecelia Coker Bell Gallery will present the work of Colorado-based painter and draftsman Laura Carpenter Truitt from Feb. 3-28.

Truitt’s exhibit of paintings and drawings entitled “Thresholds” opens with a reception from 7-8 p.m. on Monday, Feb. 3 in the Cecelia Coker Bell Gallery. It is free and open to the public.

Truitt describes the point of view in her paintings and drawings as “a threshold of sorts,” one where she imagines “looking out and looking in at the same time.” The resulting compositions can be viewed as landscapes seen through transparent architecture or a hybrid where structure and nature compete for the same space. As a group, the images capture an energetic visual conflict between the geometry of architecture and the organic forms of nature.

Truitt is originally from Yellow Springs, Ohio, and received a Bachelor of Arts degree in painting from Goucher College in Baltimore, Md. She received her Master of Fine Arts degree from Colorado State University in 2012. She has also studied at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, the Glasgow School of Art in Glasgow, Scotland, and the Vermont Studio Center in Johnson, Vt. Truitt currently lives and works in Fort Collins, Colo.

The Cecelia Coker Bell Gallery is located in the Gladys C. Fort Art Building on the Coker College campus. The gallery hours are from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., Monday through Friday, while classes are in session.
