Coker Teams Up for Hands on Hartsville

HARTSVILLE, S.C. – Jan. 28, 2014 – Coker College has paired with the Greater Hartsville Chamber of Commerce and the Hartsville campus of Florence Darlington Technical College to establish “Hands on Hartsville,” a one-day community service project throughout the community.

From 8 a.m. to noon on April 5, volunteers and project coordinators will come together to support local non-profit agencies with various service projects. Project ideas are currently being taken and will be accepted until Jan. 31. Donations and volunteers for the event will be requested beginning in mid-February. Final locations and a schedule of projects will be announced at a later date.

The mission of “Hands on Hartsville” is to provide leadership development for college students while bringing together all sectors of the community in support of local non-profit agencies.

Coker’s Coordinator of the Engaged Learning Program, Sarah Fraser, will help lead the college during the partnership while tending to the questions and concerns of anyone interested in being involved. Fraser teamed up with Aimee Cox of the Greater Hartsville Chamber of Commerce and Casey Copeland from FDTC to make the event possible.

“Hands on Hartsville is the culmination of the ideas brought together by a group of people with a common interest - the desire to give back to the community that has given so much to each of us,” said Fraser. “Coker and its students are passionate about service and giving back to others. We are appreciative and grateful for the opportunity to work with the wonderful folks at the Chamber and FDTC to make this a successful event throughout Hartsville. We are very much looking forward to April 5.”
