Coker Cracks List of Best Colleges for Veterans

HARTSVILLE, S.C. – Dec. 17, 2013 – Coker College was recently named one of America’s Best Colleges for Veterans in the U.S. News & World Report’s rankings for 2014. Coker came in at No. 3 in the South region.

U.S. News & World Report’s Best Colleges for Veterans rankings were created to provide data on which top-ranked schools offer benefits to veterans and active duty servicemembers that can help them pursue a college education. The rankings are intended to help veterans and active duty servicemembers apply, pay for and complete their degrees.

“It is wonderful to see Coker College recognized for its efforts in serving veterans,” said Angela White, assistant director of financial aid.  “We incorporate new procedures to provide veteran students with the support and resources necessary to be successful in their pursuit of an exceptional liberal arts education. It is the college's intentions to better serve veterans through participation in the various programs to benefit veterans.”

To qualify for the rankings, an institution must be a member of the Servicemembers Opportunity Colleges Consortium, be certified for the GI Bill and participate in the Yellow Ribbon Program.

“Coker College made my college educational process extremely easy for me,” said Alton Bryant, a Columbia, S.C., native who served 24 years in the military and attended college through Coker. “The enrollment process was very smooth; everything was already in place to meet the needs of students. Their classes were engaging and resourceful, and the college makes sure to spotlight its veteran presence on campus. This ranking is well-deserved, and I am honored to have been part of this veteran-friendly institution.”

Bryant attended Coker through its evening program, the Adult Learners Program for Higher Achievement (ALPHA). He graduated in May 2013 with a bachelor’s degree in business administration. He retired from active military duty in the United States Army in 2004 as a sergeant first class. In addition, he was selected to provide the first serve for the men’s volleyball team in its inaugural home game in February. Currently, Bryant serves as a diesel mechanic instructor at Fort Jackson in Columbia, S.C.

U.S. News & World Report defines a baccalaureate college as an institution that focuses on undergraduate education while offering a wide range of degree programs in the liberal arts as well as professional fields, such as business and education.
