Coker Enactus Kicks Off Let’s CAN Hunger Campaign

HARTSVILLE, S.C. – Oct. 23, 2013 – Members of the Coker College Enactus team have been selected to compete in the 2013–2014 ‘Let’s CAN Hunger’ campaign, an initiative sponsored by Campbell Soup Company to relieve hunger and find long-term solutions to the complex challenges of food insecurity in America.

Campbell’s ‘Let’s CAN Hunger’ is a competition that mobilizes Enactus teams in the United States to measure and demonstrate a comprehensive approach to addressing hunger. Teams will organize and execute food drives for urgent hunger relief and empower those in need to defeat the cycle of hunger.

“According to Feeding America, the nation’s leading domestic hunger-relief charity, one in six people in America do not know where their next meal will come from,” said Tyler Staub, a member of Coker’s Enacuts team and project leader for the initiative. “Coker Enactus sees this program as an opportunity to do something tangible to help struggling families in our community and, at the same time, to be a part of helping to create lasting, national solutions.”

“We are planning a number of activities beginning immediately and extending throughout the academic year, which will culminate next spring in our Amazing Food Race, a fun competition we believe will become a popular annual event,” Steve Marciano, Coker Enactus director said.  “Given the urgent nature of hunger in our community, we have already reached out to a number of local organizations to set up food donation sites around Hartsville, and the responses have been exciting.”

Those wishing to participate in part of the 'Let’s CAN Hunger' campaign can drop off donations at the Coker Enactus Office in Grannis Hall, Coker College Library, Coker College Post Office, Carolina Pines Regional Medical Center, Duke Energy Center for Innovation, Hartsville Community Library, Matt’s Game Exchange, LuLu’s Boutique and the Hartsville YMCA.

“One platform in our corporate social responsibility strategy is a commitment to reduce childhood obesity and hunger,” said Denise Morrison, president and CEO, Campbell Soup Company. “We recognize that we cannot fight hunger by ourselves, and are thrilled that Campbell’s ‘Let’s Can Hunger’ has helped Enactus make a difference in these communities.

“Enactus teams have collectively raised more than 4.3 million pounds of food for food banks since the program’s inception, and I am personally excited that we have leveraged our partnership and passion to make it happen.”
