McClerklin-Motley Appointed to Social Work Council

HARTSVILLE, S.C. – Sept. 30, 2013 – Coker College assistant professor of social work and department chair for the social work program Shirley McClerklin-Motley has been appointed as a member of the Council on the Role and Status of Women in Social Work Education.

The council is part of the Council on Social Work Education, a non-profit national association. McClerklin-Motley serves on the council, which began Sept. 11 and runs until June 30, 2015.

“I am excited about working with such a prestigious council and extremely happy to be in a position to impact the lives of women on a local and national basis,” said McClerklin-Motley.

The council is responsible for the development of educational resources relevant to women’s issues within social work education. Working to eliminate all procedures within academia that hinder the full participation of women, the council makes recommendations to the CSWE board of directors on all matters of policy. The council also initiates and coordinates programs and activities related to women in social work education.

In her capacity as council member, McClerklin-Motley has received a formal invitation from the White House office of public engagement to attend a briefing on social work education featuring officials from the White House, Department of Health and Human Services and other federal agencies. The briefing will take place on Sept. 25 in the White House executive office building.

McClerklin-Motley has been a member of the Coker faculty since 2000. She received her master’s degree and is a doctorate candidate from the University of South Carolina.
