Dan Shanks Hired as Athletic Development Officer

HARTSVILLE, S.C. – Sept. 19, 2013 – Alumnus and former basketball player Dan Shanks has accepted an appointment, which began in August, as Coker College’s athletic development officer.

“To be able to work with Hartsville residents, Coker alumni and Coker athletics in order to enhance the experience of Coker athletes is tantamount to a higher calling,” said Shanks. “The chance to work in higher education is an extreme pleasure, and to grow the interest in Coker College and Coker athletics is very exciting for me. As a former basketball player, I am truly excited to see the transformation and expansion occurring in Coker athletics and the college.”

Shanks’ duties within the office of institutional advancement include growing awareness and increasing philanthropic support for Coker athletics and the Cobra Club through community and alumni engagement.

Shanks most recently worked as a human terrain specialist for Human Terrain System of the U.S. Army and, prior to that, as a social studies instructor in the Lee County School System.

“We are especially thrilled to have Dan Shanks back on Coker’s campus,” said Tricia Meinhold, vice president for institutional advancement. “As a student-athlete, Dan was exceptionally successful, and I have no doubt that in his new role as athletic development officer for Coker College, he will be equally successful.”

A longtime Hartsville resident, Shanks played basketball under head coach Dan Schmotzer while attending Coker from 1993 to 1997. He graduated with a bachelor’s degree in history and physical education and is currently pursuing his master’s degree from the University of South Carolina.

Coker College readies undergraduates for personal and professional success through a distinctive four-year program that emphasizes a practical application of the liberal arts as well as hands-on and discussion-based learning within and beyond the classroom. Coker is ranked among the “Best Colleges” in the South by U.S. News & World Report as well as The Princeton Review.
