Coker Teams with Wells Fargo for Business Academy

HARTSVILLE, S.C. – Sept. 18, 2013 – Coker College Provost and Dean of the Faculty Tracy Parkinson announced a partnership between Coker and Wells Fargo today. The two have teamed up to create The Wells Fargo Summer Business Academy at Coker College, a week-long business program for high school students to be held on Coker’s campus during the summer. It will begin in the summer of 2014.

“Coker College is delighted to help educate the youth of the region with this business academy,” said Parkinson. “The faculty, Enactus team and entrepreneurs of Hartsville are going to play a vital role in educating high school students on the importance of self-development. They will come out of this program with a higher level of knowledge and confidence to help shape the future of the business world. We are excited to partner with Wells Fargo for this academy and can’t wait to get started next summer.”

The academy will target rising high school seniors with a record of achievement and a demonstrated interest in business. Students participating in the academy will have the opportunity to spend a week on the Coker campus learning about topics such as marketing, management and entrepreneurship from college faculty members, regional executives, small business owners, entrepreneurs and student mentors.

Using Coker’s engaged learning model, students will explore multiple aspects of developing and growing a business. They will have the unique opportunity to present their business plans to a panel of faculty members and local entrepreneurs. Upon successful completion of the academy, students will be eligible for three semester hours of college credit for BA 101, Introduction to Business.

“Wells Fargo has a strong focus on supporting education, and we are proud to launch The Wells Fargo Summer Business Academy with Coker College,” said John Bankson, Pee Dee Region Market President for Wells Fargo. “We know that the students of today are tomorrow’s future leaders. They’ll comprise our workforce and help define our economy. This program will help students receive the necessary skills and knowledge needed for future success in business and life.”

In addition to Coker faculty and local entrepreneurs, members of Coker’s Enactus team will serve as instructors in the academy. Enactus is an international non-profit organization that brings together student, academic and business leaders who are committed to using the power of entrepreneurial action to improve the quality of life and standard of living for people in need. Enactus encourages students to use business concepts to develop community outreach projects, transform lives and shape a better, more sustainable world.

Now entering its fourth year at Coker, the college’s Enactus team was nationally ranked as a top-60 team in 2011 and top-40 team in both 2012 and 2013.
