Coker Hosting 9/11 Service and Remembrance Day

HARTSVILLE, S.C. – Sept. 3, 2013 – Coker College freshman volunteers will participate in one of Coker’s largest coordinated service projects on Saturday, Sept. 7 in observation of the National Day of Service and Remembrance.

“By participating in our 9/11 Day of Service, Coker students, faculty and staff contribute to the beautification of our city and the well-being of its residents,” said Darlene Small, assistant dean and director of the center for engaged learning. “It is an experience that not only benefits those that are served but also provides an opportunity for those who participate to engage in self-reflection and feel a sense of accomplishment in the joy of giving back.”

At least 200 students will collectively volunteer at various sites in Darlington County. Their service will include the following locations and activities:

•    Hartsville Boys and Girls Club, to clean, landscape and paint
•    Carolina Elementary School, to landscape and paint
•    Coker Library, to move furniture, shelve books and clean
•    Darlington County Disability and Special Needs, to paint
•    Darlington County Habitat, to assist with light construction, paint and clean up at a few sites
•    Darlington County Head Start at the Old Thornwell School, St. Joseph Center and Extended Day Campus to paint playground equipment and fences, landscape, put out mulch and clean up
•    Hartsville Downtown Development Association, to paint and clean up
•    Hartsville Fire Department, to paint hydrants
•    Kalmia Gardens, to make hypertufa pots
•    Morningside Assisted Living, to landscape and do arts and crafts with residents
•    Morrell Nursing Home, to do activities with residents

Also in honor of the National Day of Service and Remembrance, a 9-11 remembrance ceremony will take place at 11 a.m. Thursday, Sept. 5 at Coffee in the Courtyard. An Army veteran and current student will ring the bell during a moment of silence. Students will have the opportunity to sign a banner commemorating loved ones lost on Sept. 11, 2001, or to write about their own memories of the day.
