Professor McCracken Receives Book Contract

HARTSVILLE, S.C. – Aug. 30, 2013 – Coker College Professor of English David McCracken has received a book contract from McFarland Publishing for his new book Postmodern Parody in the Novels of Chuck Palahniuk.

“Palahniuk is an extremely popular author at the moment,” said McCracken. “His mass appeal is predicated on the realization that these marginalized characters are actually more in the cultural center then they think, and readers clearly identify with how they navigate within the Palahniuk fictional universe.

“However, there are not many scholarly interpretations of his more recent novels: the majority of publications pertain to his popular novel Fight Club.  I decided to pursue writing a book that focuses on Palahniuk’s application of parody in his novels after I began giving presentations on his books at conferences.”

McCracken’s book will apply postmodern theory to Palahniuk’s post 2004 works: Haunted, Snuff, Pygmy, Damned, and Invisible Monsters Remix. These novels follow a variety of protagonists experiencing extreme situations such as going to a horror-filled writers’ retreat to living with disfigurement after an accident.

McCracken has been a member of the Coker faculty since 1998. He received his bachelor’s degree from Belmont College and his master’s degree and doctorate from Texas A&M University. McCracken has published articles about such authors as D. H. Lawrence, F. Scott Fitzgerald and Raymond Carver.
