HARTSVILLE, S.C. – Aug. 9, 2013 – Coker College has been ranked No. 2 in South Carolina for college campus safety in a recent survey by The rankings show the safest colleges and universities that are four-year and above.

“Being ranked second in the state for campus safety is a testament to our campus as a whole,” said Michael Williamson, director of campus safety. “The safety of Coker College is not the responsibility of just one department, and I believe that this ranking signifies the investment the entire campus community takes in providing such an environment.”

To compile the list, utilized Clery and FBI data to analyze 1,407 colleges and universities to assign safety ratings. The assigned ratings are based on the following criteria: number of weapon occurrences, drugs, burglary, vehicle theft, arson, larceny, robbery, forcible and non-forcible rape, murder and non-negligent manslaughter, and aggravated assault.

Colleges and universities were ranked for campus safety on a scale that accounts for severity of a crime as well as frequency of crime. Campus crime statistics are per 100 students.

“While many of the ranking services use criteria that make many of us wonder why they are used, this particular ranking uses statistics required under the Clery Act and is crucial for safety ratings,” said Steve Terry, vice president for student enrollment services. “For this reason, very definitive data is used and comparisons between institutions become very clear. In this case, it is good to be recognized by this as one of the safest campuses in South Carolina.”

The Clery Act requires all colleges and universities that participate in federal financial aid programs to keep and disclose information about crime on and near their respective campuses. Compliance is monitored by the United States Department of Education, which can impose civil penalties, up to $35,000 per violation, against institutions for each infraction and can suspend institutions from participating in federal student financial aid programs.
