HARTSVILLE, S.C. – March 27, 2013 – Coker College’s Halee Polson, a Hartsville native who will graduate with a degree in business administration in May, was honored this week with the Algernon Sydney Sullivan award.

Named for a prominent 19th-century lawyer, orator, mediator and philanthropist, the Algernon Sydney Sullivan award is intended to help perpetuate the excellence of character and service to humanity exemplified by its namesake by recognizing and honoring selflessness, generosity of service, nobility of character, integrity and depth of spirituality.

Polson was nominated for the award by associate professor of history Kevin Kenyon, who noted, in particular, her “willingness to face and engage the world.”

“She is unfailingly honest and is noticeably hard working.  Her peers take notice of these qualities.  She treats her fellow students with respect and the dignity that she knows all human beings deserve,” Kenyon said.

At Coker, Polson’s commitment to social entrepreneurship and service has been exemplified through her leadership with Enactus, a global community of student, academic and business leaders using entrepreneurial action to transform lives and shape a more sustainable world.

Part of Coker’s Enactus team since 2010, Polson was elected to serve on the organization’s executive team this year and has worked directly with two of the program’s most successful projects:  literacy tutoring for local children and SAT Prep, a program serving high school students in Darlington, Timmonsville and Hartsville.

During the summer of 2012, Polson completed a month-long internship that was focused primarily on marketing, sales and accounting with Indokemika Jayatama, a chemical supplier in Jakarta, Indonesia.

Since 1934, the Algernon Sydney Sullivan Foundation has taken as its primary mission the work of inspiring young people to lead lives of integrity, characterized by service above self and service to their communities.  The Foundation seeks to accomplish this goal through awarding scholarships to deserving students, through presenting awards to graduating college seniors and community members who have distinguished themselves in service to others and service to their communities and through promoting social entrepreneurship and service.

Coker College readies undergraduates for personal and professional success through a distinctive four-year program that emphasizes a practical application of the liberal arts as well as hands-on and discussion-based learning within and beyond the classroom. Coker is ranked among the “Best Colleges” in the South by U.S. News & World Report as well as The Princeton Review. Located in Hartsville, S.C., Coker is within two hours of the cultural, financial and recreational resources of Charlotte, Columbia, Charleston and Myrtle Beach.
