HARTSVILLE – March 12, 2013 – Rotary International Director Anne L. Matthews, a native of Lake City, S.C., has been appointed to serve as the vice president of Rotary International for the 2013-14 year.

The first woman elected to serve as vice president of Rotary International, Matthews is also the first woman to be elected to serve both as a trustee of The Rotary Foundation and as a director of Rotary International.

“Through a career that has blended the highest ideals of service and scholarship, Anne has applied a personal love for learning to her passion for others, and we could not be more proud,” said Coker College President Robert Wyatt.

A former director with the South Carolina State Department of Education, Matthews is president of Matthews and Associates, an educational consulting firm based in Columbia, S.C.

She earned her baccalaureate degree from Coker College, a master’s in business from Appalachian State University and a doctorate from the University of South Carolina.

An educator by profession, a published author, and a public speaker, Matthews has served as president of several national educational organizations, including the National Business Education Association.  She has served on a number of boards of business, education, economic and civic organizations including on the board of the American Cancer Society. Matthews has spoken in all 50 states and 30 foreign countries.

The recipient of numerous honors, Matthews received the Distinguished Alumni Achievement Award from Coker College in 1987 and a Doctor of Humane Letters from Coker College in 1988.  She served on the Board of Trustees of Coker College from 1980 through 1985 and again from 2003 through 2008.

A member of Leadership South Carolina, Matthews has received two appointments from President Ronald Reagan.  She has also been honored by the YWCA, the Girl Scouts of America, received the key to Lake City, S.C., and was inducted into the Hall of Fame from Florence County School District 3.

A Rotarian since 1989, Anne has served Rotary International as Foundation Trustee, Regional Rotary Foundation Coordinator, Rotary International President’s Representative, Rotary International’s International Assembly Lead Seminar Trainer, committee and task force member, Rotary International Training Leader and District Governor. She is the recipient of Rotary International’s Service Above Self Award and The Rotary Foundation’s Citation for Meritorious Service and the Distinguished Service Award.

Matthews is the past president of the Rotary Club of Columbia East and served as District Governor of District 7770 in 1999-2000. She completed a three-year term as the District’s Foundation chair in 2006, and during the 2006 Rotary year, District 7770 was ranked as number one in the world in annual giving and number seven in total giving to the Foundation, and she was honored as the District’s Rotarian of the Year. Matthews initiated the Paul Harris Society in 2005-06, the Centennial year, and District 7770 secured 125 chartered members.  She completed a three-year term as the Regional Rotary Foundation Coordinator in 2009.

Matthews is a sustaining member of Rotary International, multiple Paul Harris Fellow, a charter member of the Bequest Society and the Paul Harris Society, a Benefactor, a Ten Star Rotarian and a Major Donor.
