HARTSVILLE, S.C. – Jan. 23, 2013 – Coker College has been selected to participate in the Information Fluency in the Disciplines: Workshop on Foreign Languages, Literatures and Cultures that will be held Feb. 14–16 in Charleston, S.C.

A competitive program administered by the Council of Independent Colleges and sponsored by the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation, the initiative is intended to help colleges strengthen offerings within humanities majors. Twenty-three institutions were selected to participate in program in 2013.

“The CIC’s Information Fluency Workshops bring together disciplinary and research knowledge in exciting new ways,” said Rosemary G. Feal, executive director of the Modern Language Association and the workshop’s keynote speaker. “The Charleston workshop in foreign languages, literatures and cultures will give participants tools to create and curate information that will enhance our students’ learning experience. The better we learn languages, the more we will be prepared to meet global challenges.”

Coker’s project proposal was a collaborative effort of Coker faculty members Alexa Bartel, Cathleen Cuppett and Mac Williams.

The Council of Independent Colleges is the major national service organization for small and mid-sized, independent, liberal arts colleges and universities in the U.S. It focuses on providing services to campus leaders through seminars, workshops and programs that assist institutions in improving educational offerings, administrative and financial performance and institutional visibility.

The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation, which is headquartered in New York City, makes grants principally in five core program areas: higher education and scholarship, libraries and scholarly communications, conservation and the environment, museums and art conservation, and performing arts.
