HARTSVILLE – Jan. 7, 2013 – Local bookstore owner Emily Phillips has accepted an appointment, effective Jan. 28, to serve as director of campus retail operations at Coker College.

Phillips owns and manages Burry Bookstore, a 40-year-old family business on West Carolina Avenue, which she purchased from her father, the late Charles E. Burry Sr., in 1994 and will continue to operate.

“Emily has vast experience with bookstores, and she has a wonderful ability to build lasting relationships with local and regional partners,” said Coker College President Robert Wyatt.  “We are excited to work with her.”

In recent years, despite the enormous challenges of the Great Recession, mega-store competitors and the proliferation of electronic readers, Phillips has successfully maintained the small, independent bookstore using, among other strategies, personalized email and targeted social media campaigns to promote unique downtown events including luncheons, book signings and special presentations by visiting authors.

Phillips, who has a bachelor’s degree from Furman University in Greenville, S.C., replaces Coker College bookstore manager Kyle Fisher, who moved away from the area early in 2012.

The College Bookstore is on the first floor of the David R. and May R. Coker Center, adjacent to the Library-Information Technology Center and across Davidson Walkway from the Music Building.  In addition to textbooks, clothing and a wide assortment of college merchandise, Coker’s bookstore offers a wide variety of products and services including school supplies, computer and electronic items, convenience food, greeting cards and gifts.
