HARTSVILLE, S.C. – Aug. 16, 2012 – Coker College's Associate Professor of Education Susan D. Henderson and Director of Intramurals and Wellness Brandon Fain have received Coker College’s Redefining Ready Award for innovative, forward-thinking service.

Coker College President Robert Wyatt established the award in 2010, shortly after delivering his inauguration address, a speech in which he used the term “re-defining ready” to represent a fundamental ambition that drives his vision for Coker.

The award, which was presented by Wyatt during his annual State of the College address today, is intended to recognize College employees who exemplify the ability to help create strategic changes that advance the institution’s core mission to prepare students for lifelong success.

Henderson joined the College in 2005 and was recently appointed to serve as the first director of the new Joseph L. and Betty C. Wiggins School of Education at Coker College, which opened earlier this month.

Henderson is a member of the South Carolina Education Deans Alliance and serves on the Board of Directors of the South Carolina Center for Educator Recruitment, Retention and Advancement.  She conducts research in the field of literacy, leads local workshops for teachers and has made presentations at state, national and international conferences.

Henderson earned her undergraduate degree from Davidson College, her teaching credentials from Coker College and her M.Ed. and Ph.D. from Georgia State University.

Over the past year, in addition to serving as chair of the education department, Henderson oversaw the department’s efforts in support of PULSE (a collaborative effort funded by Sonoco to improve educational opportunities for children in Hartsville), coordinated a program review and site visit by the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education, and directed the department’s move into a new building purchased by the college last spring.

Fain joined the College in 2010.  Working within the Office of Campus Life, Fain has focused his efforts on combating unhealthy trends, especially prevalent in the South, to create a college experience that helps students become healthy, satisfied and engaged.  Last year, he oversaw the College’s implementation of a new fitness assessment for incoming students, an initiative directed by the College’s strategic plan and which drew positive national attention.   This year Fain will lead the institution’s efforts to expand wellness initiatives that serve faculty and staff as well as students.

Fain earned a bachelor’s degree from Morehead State University and a master’s degree from Ohio University.

Previous recipients of the Re-Defining Ready Award are Associate Professor of Theater Phyllis Fields, Interactive Media Developer Harrison Waters, Dean of Students Jason Umfress and Associate Professor of Mathematics Kaye Crook. Following her retirement from teaching in 2011, Professor Emerita Crook continues to serve the College as Coker’s faculty athletic representative.
