HARTSVILLE, S.C. – Aug. 8, 2012 – Coker College will host an open house and ribbon cutting ceremony at the newly renovated two-bedroom apartments at 134 E. College Avenue at 10 a.m. Aug. 14.

“Last year’s enthusiastic response to the College’s decision to add downtown housing, the Downtown Lofts, made the decision to open another downtown facility an easy one,” said Coker College President Robert Wyatt.

“This year, the Downtown Lofts and the new Downtown Flats were 'sold out' well ahead of the other housing options,” he added.

“One look at the building and you will understand why students can’t wait to get into these new spaces,” said Dean of Students Jason Umfress.

“All the architectural details that went into the project will have 14 of our lucky upperclassmen living in the lap of luxury.  With built-in shelving for media, hardwood kitchen cabinets, elegant crown moldings, acid-stained concrete floors, unfinished hardwood pine window trim and exposed pipes overhead, no detail was left unattended.  Each unit has the look and feel of an upscale urban townhouse.  Historic in nature, but designed for the future, these apartments are thoroughly first-class,” he said.

Each two-bedroom apartment is approximately 700 square feet and includes its own kitchen (with dishwasher, microwave and refrigerator), living room and bathroom.  Each has cable television access, wireless Internet access, a Daikin heating and cooling system and individually programmed key-card access for security.  The building also has a laundry facility similar to what is available for the on-campus residents, onsite storage, parking and an open-air back-porch gathering room for visiting or watching television.

“Renovating this building has been a labor of love," said owner Jeff Winburn.  “We poured over every detail, looking for ways to make the spaces functional and stylish, although not necessarily trendy.  This building was built in 1927, and we wanted to respect the classic aesthetic of the original structure.”

The apartments were made available on a first-come, first-served, basis based on Coker’s normal room-draw selection process, to students older than 20. Students living in the flats will be expected to adhere to the same rules and regulations as apply to all of the College’s residents and will be sharing the building with staff from Coker’s department of residence life.
