HARTSVILLE, S.C. – April 20, 2012 – Sara Odom, Coker College professor of elementary education, was honored with the South Carolina Independent Colleges and University’s (SCICU) Excellence in Teaching Award at a reception and dinner April 10.

The Excellence in Teaching award was created to honor those faculty members from SCICU’s member institutions who demonstrate the highest standards of teaching that encourages students to strive for excellence in their studies and intellectual pursuits.

Dr. Odom began teaching at Coker in 1988 as an adjunct and then began full-time in 2000.  She brings 27 years of public school teaching experience, grades K-8, into the college classroom and has a special area of expertise in reading methods.

“The format and engaging nature of the College’s student teaching seminar is a result of Sara’s creativity, energy and innovation,” said Provost Tracy Parkinson, “and this is only one example of the many ways in which she is an advocate and example for continuous improvement in teaching and learning at Coker.”

Odom’s text “Becoming a Teacher in South Carolina: A Comprehensive Guide” is in its third edition, and she recently published her fourth children’s book in her Gram Tales Series and speaks to elementary students across the state about reading, writing and publishing.

A persistent champion for international experiences in education, Odom recently led study abroad trips to Greece and China.

“I am pleased and proud to endorse Dr. Odom as a model of excellence in teaching to our students, particularly the future teachers she mentors, to her faculty colleagues at Coker and to the SCICU membership,” said Coker College President Robert Wyatt.
