HARTSVILLE, S.C. – Feb. 22, 2012 – In conjunction with the fourth annual Coker Humanities Undergraduate Conference, keynote speaker Professor J. Andrew Brown will lead a discussion about graduate school admissions at 2 p.m. Friday in the Faculty Research Room on the second floor of the Charles W. and Joan S. Coker Library Information Technology Center.

“The admissions process for graduate school is definitely getting more competitive, and it is certainly time consuming,” explained Brown.  “At the same time, I find in my field far too many applications that could have been much better had the applicant received some (or better) coaching.”

The discussion, titled "Thoughts on creating a compelling graduate school application from someone who would like to read more of them," is free and open to the public and refreshments will be served.

Brown’s keynote lecture, “Fantasizing Borges,” is about converging influences of Argentine writer Jorge Luis Borges and best-selling author Neil Gaiman and will be held at 7 p.m. Friday in Davidson Auditorium.

Brown serves as associate chair of the Department of Romance Languages and Literatures and associate professor of Spanish and comparative literature at Washington University in St. Louis.

He earned his Ph.D. in Spanish at the University of Virginia. His research and teaching interests focus on issues of technology, science, global popular culture and Latin American cultural identity. He is the author of “Cyborgs in Latin America,” “Test Tube Envy: Science and Power in Argentine Narrative” and numerous articles on science, technology and Latin American literature and film.
