Guest Artist Dorian Leljak Performs Recital at Coker

HARTSVILLE, S.C. – Jan. 31, 2012 – Classical pianist Dorian Leljak, will present a recital at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 7 at Coker College.

The recital will be held in the Watson Theater of the Elizabeth Boatwright Coker Performing Arts Center and is free and open to the public.

The program will include the “Prelude in C-sharp Minor, Op. 45,” “Mazurka in C-sharp Minor, Op. 63, Nr. 3,” “Mazurka in B Minor, Op. 33, Nr. 4,” “Nocturne in B Major, Op. 62, Nr. 1,” “Nocturne in E Major, Op. 62, Nr. 2” and “Barcarolle, Op. 60,” all composed by Frédéric Chopin, and the “Sonata No.2 in B-flat Minor, Op. 36 (second version), Allegro agitato, Non allegro, Allegro molto,” by Sergei Rachmaninov.

Leljak has won numerous international piano competitions, including the Rachmaninov Competition in Belgrade and the Novi Sad Piano Competition in Serbia, and has been awarded a number of prestigious prizes, including the University of Novi Sad Merit Award and the Yale University Mary Clapp Howell, Irving Gilmore and Parisot Prizes.

He has appeared in recital and with orchestras including the Windstrings Orchestra, Wyoming Symphony Orchestra, Yale Philharmonia Orchestra, Belgrade Philharmonics, Belgrade Radio-Television Orchestra, Voyvodina Philharmonics, Yale Repertory Orchestra and many others.  With a successful career as a chamber musician, Leljak has established collaborations with cellist Istvan Varga and Pianist Ninoslav Zivkovic.  In 2002 he debuted at Carnegie Hall and Boston Philharmonia Hall.

Leljak is professor of piano at the Academy of Arts in Novi Sad and teaches at the Royal College of Music in London.  His previous engagements include teaching at the Yale School of Music. He has studied with Arbo Valdma and with Yale University’s Boris Berman.
