HARTSVILLE, S.C. –  Nov. 22, 2011 – Assistant Professor of Library Science Megan A. Johnson, a reference and instruction librarian at the Charles W. and Joan S. Coker Library Information-Technology Center, has been selected to participate in the 2012 class of the American Library Association (ALA) Emerging Leaders Program.

Now in its sixth year, the ALA Emerging Leaders Program gives library staff and information workers from across the country an opportunity to participate in project-planning workgroups, network with peers, gain an inside look into ALA structure and have an opportunity to serve the profession in a leadership capacity early in their careers.

The program kicks off with a day-long session during the 2012 ALA Midwinter Meeting in Dallas in January and will continue for six months via online learning and networking opportunities.  The experience culminates next summer at the annual conference in Anaheim, Calif., at which the 2012 class of Emerging Leaders will present a poster session to showcase the results of their collaboration.

Emerging Leader participants commit to taking part in all aspects of the program and, upon completion of program, may have an opportunity to serve on an ALA division, chapter, round table, committee, taskforce or work group.

Johnson joined Coker’s faculty in 2010.  She earned her bachelor’s degree from Pennsylvania State University and a Master of Library and Information Science from the University of Pittsburgh.

Her participation in the Emerging Leader Program is being sponsored by the South Carolina Library Association, which was established in 1915 to promote the development of quality library service freely available to all citizens of South Carolina.
