HARTSVILLE, S.C. - Sept. 13, 2011 – The Hartsville-Coker Concert Association opens its 2011-2012 season with choreographer David Dorfman's Prophets of Funk on Oct. 20 at 7:30 p.m. in the Watson Theater of the Elizabeth Boatwright Coker Performing Arts Center.

“Prophets of Funk is a dynamic engagement of movement driven by the popular – and populist – funk sounds of Sly and the Family Stone,” explains Dorfman. “Sly and the Family Stone was one of the first racially- and gender-integrated bands in American music history and solid purveyors of social consciousness.”

With Prophets of Funk, David Dorfman Dance creates a celebration both of Sly and the Family Stone’s groundbreaking, visceral and powerful music of prophetic love and of the struggles and joys of everyday people.

“It lifts up the ‘spirit of Sly’ – that in the face of the funk of life, there are still hopes and aspirations that reside in all of us,” Dorfman adds.

A Chicago native, Dorfman has been awarded four fellowships from the National Endowment for the Arts, an American Choreographer's Award, and a New York Dance & Performance Award, a “Bessie.”

Performing members of the dance company who will join Dorfman are Meghan Bowden, Timothy Edwards, Renuka Hines, Luke Gutgsell, Raja Kelly, Kendra Portier, Karl Rogers and Whitney Tucker.  Technical support personnel who will participate in the visit include audio supervisor Sam Crawford and lighting supervisor Seth Reiser.

In conjunction with his visit, David Dorfman Dance will conduct a three-day residency, Oct. 19-21, for students in Coker’s dance program, which will include a number of special activities that are open to the community. On Wednesday, Oct. 19, the public is invited to join a master dance technique and partnering class from 4 to 6 p.m. in the Elizabeth Boatwright Performing Arts Center dance studio.

On Friday, Oct. 21, from 9:30 to 11 a.m., there will be a public reception at the Midnight Rooster, and from 2 to 4 p.m. in the dance studio Dorfman will present a lecture and workshop on the creative process that is open to the community.

The residency and “Prophets of Funk” evening performance are funded in part by a grant from South Arts in partnership with the National Endowment for the Arts and South Carolina Arts Commission.

Tickets for the concert, which are available at the door, are $25 for adults, $7 for children under 18. Coker students with college identification are admitted for free. To purchase tickets online visit https://www.coker.edu/dd_dance/.
