HARTSVILLE, S.C. – April 14, 2011 – Coker College art student John Shearer’s senior show, ‘Force and Figure,’ will open on Monday, April 18, with a reception from 7 to 8 p.m. in the Cecelia Coker Bell Gallery.

“The human body has a simplistic appearance, but its complexity becomes apparent when force is introduced,” said Shearer. “My work involves the human body and the relationship between action and interaction. It becomes the forms and shapes created through the dynamic positions when forced to interact.”

Senior exhibitions, a 43-year tradition at Coker, are required of graduating art majors and are intended to represent the culmination of four years of study and offer a glimpse of the directions the artists may explore with their work following graduation.

Students who major in art select from four concentrations: fine arts, graphics and web design, photography and art education.

Shearer’s show continues through April 22. The final senior art show scheduled this semester is Nora Wofford’s, which opens on April 25.  The senior art exhibition is free and open to the public.

The Cecelia Coker Bell Gallery is located in the Gladys C. Fort Art Building on the Coker College campus. Gallery hours are from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., Monday through Friday, while classes are in session.
