HARTSVILLE, S.C. – Several Coker College faculty, staff and students had the distinct pleasure of meeting with and learning from an internationally recognized retail expert on Tuesday, September 21.

Jack Shewmaker, former president of Wal-Mart Inc., visited Coker’s campus to speak with various classes and Coker’s newly formed Students in Free Enterprise (SIFE) Team.

A prominent figure in Wal-Mart’s history, Shewmaker served as chief financial officer, vice chairman, chief operating officer and eventually president, helping to guide the store from its humble beginnings to its current standing as the world’s largest retailer.

“I’m here on invitation from Dr. Wyatt to speak to students and faculty,” said Shewmaker. “I hope to convey the simplest ingredients of success, not through what I’ve accomplished, but through what I’ve learned by observing other successful people.”

A personal friend of Coker’s President, Dr. Robert Wyatt, this was Shewmaker’s second visit to Coker’s campus. The first was for Wyatt’s inauguration. This time, Shewmaker said he wanted to focus on talking to faculty and students.

“I feel that Coker College has a brilliant future, and I want to help Dr. Wyatt help the students,” he said.

Shewmaker enjoys traveling and serves on many boards. He is also a frequent speaker on business, retailing and motivation worldwide.

One of the main points he stressed to everyone he spoke with was, “Instead of working for your own individual success, work with the goal of making the people around you successful. That’s what I did.”
