HARTSVILLE, S.C. – Thanks to the generosity of the Kiwanis Club of Hartsville, Coker College now has an endowed scholarship for education majors.

“The Kiwanis Club of Hartsville has always had a great relationship with Coker, but we wanted to take it one step further,” said James Harrell, Kiwanis President and VP of ICD North America at Sonoco Products.

Harrell presented a $10,000 check to Coker President Dr. Robert Wyatt and the Chair of the Education Department at Coker, Dr. Susan Henderson, on Tuesday to establish the scholarship.

“Kiwanis has always been focused on helping children and the community,” Harrell said. “With this scholarship, we will be helping the children of this area by supporting the education of teachers in hopes of keeping well-qualified, Coker-trained educators in South Carolina.”

The two year scholarship will be awarded every other year to a junior student from South Carolina that has been accepted into the education program. The student must also maintain a 2.75 GPA.

“Our thanks to the women and men of Kiwanis for providing a scholarship for future educators,” said Wyatt. “In a time of economic distress, it is heartening to receive support such as this to help our students achieve their academic dreams.”

Henderson said the faculty and staff of the Education Department are honored and delighted that the Kiwanis Club has chosen to endow an education scholarship at Coker College.

“We share a common commitment to children and education,” she said. “This endowment will enable Coker to continue to prepare teachers who will positively influence future generations of students.”
