Alumnus Profile
Tim Morton

If you asked Tim Morton why he came to Coker College, he would say to play college tennis and pursue his dream of playing professionally.

However, this was only one of the reasons Coker College became a second home to Morton and why he returns to visit today from Brussels, Belgium. During Morton’s four years at Coker College, he excelled on the tennis court but also became committed to excelling in the classroom. Morton received his bachelor’s degree while double majoring in communication and business administration and utilized the numerous opportunities to become involved in the college campus, not only as an athlete but as a student leader. He attributes his academic success to those who helped along the way.

“The outstanding professors at Coker College really sparked my interest in the classes that I was taking,” Morton said.

Due to his commitment as a student-athlete, Morton soon realized that doors were opening for him because of his superior performance both on and off the court. Following graduation in 2008, Morton reverted back to what had brought him to Coker in the first place, tennis. He accepted a coaching position at The Palmetto Tennis Center in Sumter, S.C., and was successful in developing a junior program as well as coaching a local high school team. However, tennis was no longer his sole passion.

Morton enrolled at North Carolina State University to pursue a master’s degree in communication, where he received a teaching/research assistantship. His education at N.C. State enhanced his understanding of marketing and communication, but solid groundwork had been laid during his years at Coker.

While in Raleigh, N.C., Morton held two internships with Savvy Marketing Group and CET Research and published three papers in academic journals. However, his internship with Sonoco in Europe ultimately allowed him to attain the position he holds today. Following his success in Brussels, Belgium, as an intern with the marketing team and upon graduation, Morton joined Sonoco’s European operations as the European marketing associate permanently in Belgium. Over the past year and a half, Morton has seen success in the various marketing projects he has managed and has recently started to assist the Consumer Division with their marketing strategy.

Morton is a frequent attendee at the Taste of Coker, an annual event benefiting Coker athletics. All the way from Belgium, he still continues to support the College by attending campus events, following the tennis team and staying in touch with members of the Coker community. Morton’s love for the game of tennis has not left him. He continues to play but is focused on his career that began at Coker. He never realized how the sport would lead him on a path from Coker to an internship, a lifelong relationship with the College and a successful career overseas.
