Hartsville, S.C. – Coker College biology major Shelly Catlett of Cope, S.C., recently gave a presentation at the Southern Division Meeting of the American Phytopathological Society in Atlanta, Ga., on Fusarium head blight (Fusarium graminearum), a fungal disease that infects wheat and barley crops.

Catlett’s presentation, entitled “Characterization of developmental mutants of Fusarium graminearum,” was based on research she and fellow students conducted in Coker College’s biology labs. The journal “Phytopathology” will publish an article based on her presentation later this year.

Catlett graduates from Coker College in May and plans to attend the College of Dental Medicine at the Medical University of South Carolina. She is advised by Coker College biology professor Joseph Flaherty.
