Compliance Certification Section 3.1.1

Institutional Mission

The institution has a clear and comprehensive mission statement that guides it; is approved by the governing board; is periodically reviewed by the board; and is communicated to the institution's constituencies.

Coker College is in compliance.

The mission statement is the College's official statement of purpose (see Section 2.4). The current revision was developed as part of the College's 2003 Strategic Plan [410], and first presented to the Board of Trustees in that context at the spring 2003 meeting, as shown by meeting minutes [1128]. The board approved a change to the bylaws of the College at its fall 2003 meeting, as shown by meeting minutes [1113, pp 2-3]. This revision of the mission was designed to clarify rather than significantly change the previous statement.

The previous revision of the mission took place in 1995, also as part of a strategic planning process, which the board approved.

The mission statement is used as the basis for planning and assessment at both the strategic and unit levels. For example, the general education program is assessed based on the core skills in the second paragraph of the mission statement, as is described in Section 3.5.1. Effectiveness plans and unit goals are derived from the mission statement. The organizational chart links to unit pages, each of which has its own mission, goals, and plan.

The mission statement is published on the college web site and in the academic catalog [510, p 1], which is distributed mainly in electronic form through the website, although paper copies can also be purchased in the campus bookstore. The mission also appears in the college bylaws [428]. The previous mission can be found in older academic catalogs, for example [675], [676].
