Hartsville, SC – Steve Martin’s adaptation of “The Underpants,” a satire about the middle class, will be performed at Coker College on Friday, March 10 and Saturday, March 11 at 8 p.m. and Sunday, March 12 at 3 p.m. in the Black Box Theater of the Elizabeth Boatwright Performing Arts Center. Admission is free and the public is invited to attend.

“The Underpants” tells the story of Louise Maske, a faithful housewife who causes a scandal when her underwear falls down while she attends the King’s parade. Her husband fears this mishap will harm his reputation and his career so he decides to rent out rooms in their home.

Using a combination of slapstick and satire, “The Underpants” questions the manners, morals, and beliefs of the bourgeois. Written by Carl Sternheim in 1910, the play was initially banned before becoming a hit. In 2002, Martin made the play relative to today’s audience by using current references and modern humor. “The Underpants” makes good use of double entendres and comedic timing.

Coker’s production of “The Underpants” is directed by senior Jena Chambers. It stars Donald Quist, Amie Ceo, Rose Forman, Nick Hilbourn, Robert McCready and Tavy Garcia. The stage is managed by Jermaine Cooper, Katie Reynolds and Garcia. Jim Fleming is the technical director.
