With music and lyrics by Jason Robert Brown, “Songs for the New World” was originally staged at the WPA Theater Off-Broadway in 1996. A blend of showmanship and exciting sound, the play is a variety of stories dealing with expectations of love, money and the American Dream, including a young man using basketball as a way out of the ghetto, a woman who dreams of marrying rich, and a jailed man questioning his actions.

“Songs for a New World” stars Coker students Wesley Atkinson, Bryant Belin, Jessica Brill, Michelle Caulder, Eric Decker, Jennifer Jackson, Ben Johnson, Gillian Mulligan, Angela Price, and Katie Reynolds. Graham Wood, assistant professor of music, is the musical director and the Angela M. Gallo, assistant professor of dance, is the choreographer.
