| Hartsville, SC The Coker College Alumni Association has awarded its 2004 Outstanding Young Alumni Award to U.S. Navy combat photographer Michael Andrew Meyers of Summerville. Meyers earned an art degree with a concentration in graphic design from Coker College in 1992 and he continued his studies at the Newhouse School of Communications at Syracuse University. In 1993, Meyers joined the United States Navy and begun a stellar career serving his country as a member of the combat camera group. While posted around the globe, Meyers has received numerous awards for his camera work, including the Thomas Jefferson Award for Excellence in Photojournalism and the Director’s Choice Award for Excellence in Photojournalism. His work has been seen throughout the world, including such publications as Time and Newsweek magazines, USA Today and The New York Times. Meyers has photographed the last three U.S. presidents and his work has appeared in the books “Best of American Photography Magazine” and “Day in the Life of the Military.” In addition to being a highly successful photojournalist, Meyers is a graduate of six U.S. Navy combat and special training programs. His tours of duty include work for the Navy Seals, the CIA, the FBI, and the Joint Chiefs of Staff. Meyers is a veteran of Operation Enduring Freedom, Enduring Freedom Philippines and Iraqi Freedom. For his military service, Meyers has been awarded three Navy Achievement medals, the Joint Achievement Medal from Special Operations Command, and the Navy and Marine Corps Medal for Lifesaving. A former Eagle Scout and Coker College Ambassador, Meyers is currently stationed in Washington, DC, where he is a naval instructor. -30- |
