Hartsville, S.C. — Poet and essayist Bruce A. Jacobs will give a reading and lead a discussion of his work on Monday, February 14 at 7 p.m. in the C.W. Coker Auditorium in Davidson Hall at Coker College. Admission is free and the public is invited to attend.

Jacobs won the 1996 Naomi Long Madgett Poetry Award for Speaking Through My Skin (MSU Press) and his highly acclaimed book Race Manners (Arcade Publishing) is hailed as a practical guide to race relations in America. Admission is free and the public is invited to attend.

Published in 1999, Race Manners: Navigating the Minefield Between Black and White Americans confronts everyday racial misgivings and misunderstandings. An honest and constructive guide, it began a national dialogue on race relations. Community leaders in Toledo, Ohio, have used the book in an effective city-wide program.

Jacobs has spoken at universities, churches, and community gatherings across the country and he has appeared on NPR, C-SPAN BookTV and many radio call-in shows. His work has been in numerous publications, including American Writing, The African-American Review, and Beloit Poetry. Jacobs is a graduate of Harvard University and he lives in Maryland.

While at Coker, Jacobs will also guest teach selected English classes.
