Hartsville, S.C. – Innovative media artist Simon Tarr will show “Tia Mak,” his live video performance based on the classic documentary “Nanook of the North,” on Sunday, February 3 at 7 p.m. in Coker College’s Watson Theater. Admission is free and the public is invited to attend.

Using the latest digital art techniques, Tarr re-makes “Nanook of the North,” the 1922 silent documentary about an Inuit Eskimo, turning it into a pre-apocalyptic eco-fable. Written and produced by Robert and Frances Flaherty, “Nanook of the North” was enormously popular when originally released and is now considered a cinematic milestone.

Tarr, who teaches New Media Art and Design at the University of South Carolina (USC), specializes in comprehensive digital art and animation. An advocate for independent media makers, he has created 10 short films that have been seen throughout the world.

In 2004 Tarr was awarded residency at the Experimental Television Center in New York. He received USC’s Faculty Excellence Initiative Award in the 2005-2006 academic year.

Throughout 2008, Coker College is marking its centennial with guest speakers and other events that celebrate the Coker experience. For more information, visit www.coker.edu/100 or call 383.8018.
