Hartsville, S.C. — Sean Heffernan of Florence, S.C., is the recipient of Coker College’s 2007 Outstanding Young Alumni Award. The 1998 Coker graduate is an accomplished teacher and coach at the high school and college level. Heffernan came to Coker College from New York to earn a degree in physical education. An all-conference shortstop for the Cobras baseball team, he settled in Florence after graduation and began his teaching career. Since 1999, Heffernan has taught at West Florence High School where hundreds of students have benefited from his teaching and leadership skills as an assistant coach and junior varsity coach. He was named Florence School District One Teacher-of-the-Year for 2003-2004. In 2004 and 2005, Heffernan helped launch and guide the baseball program at Florence-Darlington Technical College. He has also helped lead the Florence Red Wolves, a college summer baseball team in the Coastal Plain League, as an assistant coach. Last year, he was named an assistant baseball coach for the Francis Marion University Patriots. Heffernan continues to teach PE at West Florence High School. In addition to his Bachelor of Science degree from Coker College, Heffernan holds a master’s degree in sports science with honors from the United States Sports Academy. Heffernan is married to 1997 Coker College graduate Robyn Dartnell Heffernan, who teaches at McLaurin Elementary School in Florence. They have two daughters. -30-
