Hartsville, S.C. — Coker College is holding its sixth annual social work conference, “In Celebration of Social Work: Honor Our Past, Imagine Our Future,” on Friday, October 14 from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. This year’s keynote speaker will be Dr. Frank Raymond, Dean Emeritus of the College of Social Work at University of South Carolina. Conference attendees with state social work licenses can earn up to 5.5 re-licensure hours.

The conference includes three sessions of workshops addressing a variety of topics, including “Equine Facilitated Therapy,” “Planning in Advance for the End of Life,” “Slanguage, Imagery and Rap Music,” and “International Social Work: AIDS in South Africa.” A final panel session will discuss “Planning for the Future of Social Work.”

Raymond was Dean of the College of Social Work at the University of South Carolina from 1980 until his retirement in 2002. Under his tenure, the college became one of the highest rated social work programs in the country. It quadrupled in size, expanded academic programs, pioneered study-abroad and international educational partnerships, and lead the way in the use of technology for social workers.

Prior to entering social work education Raymond held professional practice positions with the Virginia Department of Social Services, the VA Hospital system, the Federal Probation system, the Tulane Medical School, and the Louisiana Narcotics Rehabilitation Commission.

Presenters at Coker College’s sixth annual social work conference include Kathy Hunter, interim executive director of the South Carolina National Association of Social Workers; Brenda Hyleman of Community Long Term Care, Vanessa Sandsbury of the Darlington County School District, Carolyn Minor of the Sumter County Department of Health and Environmental Control, Bonnie Smith of Greenville Technical College, and Tina Outlaw of the S.C. VA Hospital. Coker College social work students and Shirley McClerklin-Motley, assistant professor of social work, will also conduct to workshops.
