Senior Monica Posey of Wellford, SC, was a summer intern at ReGenesis Community Health Center in Spartanburg.

Hartsville, S.C.— Coker College senior Monica Posey spent much of last summer at the ReGenesis Community Health Center in Spartanburg.  She was participating in an internship awarded to her by the South Carolina Office of Rural Health as part of the Palmetto Initiative for Excellence: Creating Diversity in Health Care Leadership program (PIE).

The internship gave Posey, who is earning a Bachelor of Social Work degree from Coker, valuable experience in healthcare administration. She shadowed health center staff, learned their daily responsibilities, and learned firsthand how healthcare organizations operate.

Posey also organized a Back to School Health Fair. She feels that the internship at ReGenesis was a rewarding experience that has given her a greater awareness of the dedication that working in a health field entails.

“Working at the center made me look at healthcare administration differently,” she said. “I have a new found respect for people who are health administrators. Their jobs are extensive and they require a great amount of time and effort.”

Posey eventually plans to be a child advocate lawyer. She believes that the internship was beneficial because she will have to work closely with community health centers in her future career.

Implemented in 1998, the PIE was designed to increase African-American representation in the health administration throughout South Carolina. The program offers a four-week internship or a nine- month post graduate fellowship to motivated African-American college juniors and seniors who are seeking a career in health administration.
